Scaling Agile was the talk of the town a few years back. These days not so much. Even though many are struggling with setups bigger than a couple of teams. The Scaling models that are out there today can be described as too BIG, too confusing, too simple or not offering enough added value compared to the current situation. In 2020 I was working in a company, as a Scrum Master. 2 teams. 16 people. We were facing a make-or-break deadline 6 weeks into the future, on a project that had been in the making for more than a year. The initial step: Deciding on FAST as a way to Scale Looking into the next 6 weeks of work, the team voiced that 2 weeks sprints was to long a planning horizon: new work and better ways of solving problem emerged daily. They wanted to pair up with some of the persons on the other team, that they hadn’t been working with “for ages”. The static team structure of 7-9 people on each team was not helping get work done in the best or optimal way. To sum it up: The structures and elements of Scrum – that I’ve loved over the years – was in the situation becoming what was slowing us down. New I explained FAST Agile, to the Product Owner: “Sounds great! Let’s do it!” And with that we explained it to the Team Members, and suggested it as an experiment, running for the next couple of weeks. FAST - as a way to scale Agile - has been around for more than 5 years. Some have heard of it. A few has actual experience with the framework. This Experience Report is a tangible description of how I facilitated 2 Scrum Teams of 16 people to work within the FAST Agile frame for 4 months. Using 2 day iterations. Fluid allocation of team members towards the work that was most important. Embedding Feature Stewardship towards maturing requirements. And delivering high degree of value, with a consistent flow of changes, still enabling us to meet an almost impossible deadline. The intention of this report is to inspire the reader to start working with some or all elements of FAST Agile. Removing the first and initial fear of starting out. Giving tangible ideas on how to bottom up get Scrum Teams to work as FAST Agile. Enabling a top-down decision on Scaling Agile for up to 200 people.
